5 Summer activities that you need to finally try

Although the other seasons bring out their own magic, there is nothing quite like summer. The longer days and warmer temperatures bring so many opportunities! And although resolutions are usually reserved for New Year’s, here are five awesome activities we reckon you need to commit to trying out during the sunshine season. (Psst … there’s also the ultimate summer bucket list for an even more epic summer!).

Stand up paddle-boarding (SUP)

In case you haven’t heard of it, stand up paddle-boarding involves standing on a large board (like a giant surfboard), and using a long paddle to glide across the lake or sea. Perfect for those who want amazing views whilst getting a great core workout! If standing up feels a bit too challenging to begin with (or the waves start coming in), you can kneel or straddle the board for a bit more stability. There are more and more places to hire paddle-boards popping up around the country, so give it a go! And remember ladies – safety first, always wear a life jacket!

Bike touring

Back in our childhoods we rode bikes around all the time – but as adults, driving the car is often far too convenient to pass up! However, New Zealand is full of amazing bike trails, and some lead to incredible views that are inaccessible by car. You can either take a guided tour, or hire a bike and go exploring on your own. Just make sure someone always knows roughly where you’ll be and what time you’ll be back!

Watch an outdoor movie

This will obviously be dependent on what’s available in your area, but outdoor movies are making a comeback! Pack a picnic and some warm clothes, and relive some old classics. For extra comfort, bring some foldout chairs or a laybag (also known as an inflatable bean bag) to keep your tush happy.

Beach volleyball/cricket

There is something extra awesome about sports on the beach, and the added challenge of running around on the sand means it doubles up as awesome exercise too! Get some music playing through a bluetooth speaker, add some drinks and a barbecue (since you’ve done all that hard work running around), and you’re good to go!

Fruit picking

It is seriously satisfying eating fruit or berries that you picked yourself – they always taste better! Foraging can be incredibly therapeutic too, so it’s an excellent activity to clear your mind if life has been a bit hectic lately. There are places dotted around the country where you can pay as you pick, or there are free spots around too (particularly for blackberries) – just check they haven’t been weed sprayed. For extra connection with beautiful Mother Earth, go barefoot!

Visit a winery

Ok, so this is a bonus one, because this *could* be seen as similar to the bike touring idea … but there’s wine.

Ladies.

There’s wine.
