Dark lipsticks are on trend this winter, in a big way. With it being such a dramatic style, it has us wondering if we could ever pull the look off or if it’s destined to stay on the red carpet?
While it can be an intimidating idea, read my lips: You can definitely pull off a dark lip! I’ve broken down this trend into a couple of easy steps so tomorrow you can pull out your favourite dark colour and rock it with confidence.
4 steps to the perfect dark lip colour
Start by exfoliating your lips. Get rid of any old and dry skin by using a sugar scrub to give a quick once over. Alternatively you can use an old toothbrush to gently scrub your lips once a week. Both ways will give you clean surface to begin with.
Next, cover over your lips with foundation. While it may seem an odd suggestion it will neutralise your natural lip colour which allows the pigment from the lipstick to stay true to the shade of the packaging. There’s nothing worse than choosing a lipstick and it looking a different colour on your lips to what you thought you had brought.
Then, apply your lipstick. Start in the centre and use short strokes to gently fill in your lips. Once you have the initial coat on you can use longer strokes to blend it all together. If you like the colour after one layer then leave it at that, or, if you are game enough, then go for another layer to make it darker. Choose a matte lipstick when going dark – glossy sticky lips went out in the 70’s!
Lastly, once your colour is on it’s time to clean up your lips. Take your concealer and using a small angled brush gently define your lipline and cover any imperfections or smudges with concealer. Be sure to wipe your brush on a tissue or the back of your hand after you cover a smudge so that your not spreading smudges and making more work for yourself!
Keep the rest of your makeup simple. A beautiful gold eyeshadow and a gentle dash of bronzer would fit perfectly with your lipstick look. So go and dare to be bold!
