Goodbye Dry, Cracked Hands & Feet – Hello Soft Healthy Skin

Promotion for DU’IT

Our hands and feet bear the brunt of just living our daily lives. Hands are regularly being washed or used for cleaning and work around the house, while you’re on your feet most of the day, simply walking around, working, or exercising. All of this use, along with hot and cold weather, can take a toll on our skin, leading to dry and cracked hands or feet.

Find out how you can repair and restore the skin on your hands and feet so they are protected and soft.

It’s a tough life

Your skin has a natural barrier that is designed to keep its natural hydration in and irritants from our environment out.

tough hands

When the skin barrier is working well you’ll notice that it’s soft and hydrated. However, when that barrier becomes compromised you’ll notice it begins to feel tight and looks dry and flaky. Untreated, this can lead to painful cracks, redness, and peeling along with possible infection.

There are lots of things that contribute to the skin on your hands or feet becoming dry.

As we age, our skin becomes thinner and drier plus some people naturally have a less robust natural skin barrier. Changes in humidity and temperature, exposure to sun and wind, frequent washing or immersion in water, use of alcohol-based sanitisers, and sensitivity to soap, cleaners and chemicals can all contribute to damage to your skin’s barrier.

What makes a good moisturiser?

Look for a moisturiser that will help repair and support your skin’s natural barrier and has no chemicals or products that cause skin irritation. Avoid artificially perfumed or fragrance-heavy creams. Moisturisers often contain products that can draw water into the skin, keep it there, and also smooth the skin. While you’re wanting to put the moisture and oil back in, a super greasy cream is annoying but, conversely, a thin one that absorbs straight in without helping the barrier is not desirable either.

Looking after your feet

To keep your feet in tip-top shape, bathe in lukewarm water as hot water can cause the skin on your feet to dry out. Harsh soaps and body washes may also strip moisture from your skin. Be certain that all soap is washed off. Remember it’s also important to dry your feet thoroughly after washing, including between your toes.

Check your feet regularly for cuts, calluses, redness, eczema, and varrucas. Applying a foot-specific moisturiser can help to prevent the skin on your feet from cracking or flaking.

Well-fitting and supportive shoes that protect your feet but allow comfortable walking are the first choice for day-to-day wear. Choose socks that are made from mostly natural materials (eg, cotton in summer or wool in winter). This will allow sweat to evaporate from the skin.

Looking after your hands

There are a number of things you can do to look after the skin on your hands. Drink plenty of water, use sunscreen, use gloves when cleaning or doing dishes, and avoid direct skin contact of harsh chemicals.

The dry cold air of winter can really affect your skin so a pair of gloves when you’re outdoors can help to retain moisture in your skin too.

We are all used to washing our hands thoroughly but this can cause them to dry out. To minimise dryness and damage, use warm (not hot) water and a moisturising soap rather than a drying one. Gently clean your hands without scrubbing and also gently dab your hands dry rather than aggressively rubbing them. Then finally, apply a good moisturiser to your hands.
