Top 10 BYO Restaurants: Auckland

With over 100 nominations, 12 restaurants across  Tāmaki Makaurau have been shortlisted for the city’s first ever Best BYO Awards. 

Who doesn’t love a little BYO moment? Booming Facebook food forum Lazy Susan and go-to BYO bottle option Leftfield wines have teamed up to find the establishment that has it all: good food, a welcoming vibe and, most importantly, the option  to bring your own vino. 

So, without further ado, the shortlist for Leftfield and Lazy Susan – Auckland’s Best BYO Awards 2022 is: 

Bali Nights – 4 Williamson Avenue, Grey Lynn  

Located within the lush tropical jungles of Ponsonby, Bali Nights is bringing you a bit of Bali to Auckland. Serving authentic Indonesian roadside delicacies with a bit of a Balinese twist, the food the owners grew up with and know too well.

Big Fish Eatery – 3/710 Great South Road, Penrose 

At Big Fish Eatery they take pride in serving a modern take on traditional Pan Asian cuisine. Inspired by bold Asian flavours, beautiful produce and freshest New Zealand ingredients to create delicious dishes.

Bunga Raya Restaurant – 2a/3062 Great North Road, New Lynn 

‘If you love Malaysian or just sick of the trendy “Asian fusion” you MUST try Bunga Ray! ‘

Canton Café – 477 New North Road, Kingsland 

Their singular location in Kingsland is a go-to Chinese BYO restaurant loved by many people over the years. The ideal place for groups to share their dishes of generous portions

El Greco – 1/1 The Esplanade, Campbells Bay 

From the delicious, healthy diet of the Mediterranean you can taste the passion for food, family and life. The menu and the atmosphere in El Greco restaurant brings the memories and the spirit of Greece and Italy to you on the Shore.

Faro – 5 Lorne Street, Auckland CBD 

Authentic Korean cuisine in a relaxing dim-lit atmosphere. Known for grilled Korean BBQ only using top quality meats and fresh vegetables

Golden Jade – 417 Manukau Road, Epsom 

‘Hands down one of the most authentic canto food you’ll get in Auckland, love coming here as a big group or have our takeaway rituals here.’

Nishiki – 100 Wellington Street, Freeman’s Bay 

‘Nishiki is a popular Auckland Japanese restaurant which is more than often very packed. The food is impressive and comes pretty fast. The atmosphere is good if you like being in a bustling and lively environment. ‘

Satya – 17 Great North Road, Grey Lynn 

‘Delicious entrees and curries here. and I Love the fact you’re able to BYO. The service was lovely and there’s a bunch of seating. ‘

Sri Pinang – 356 Kārangahape Road, Auckland CBD 

‘One of my absolute favourite places to go for lunch. The staff are wonderful, the food is exceptional and to make it better it’s so cheap!’

Tianze Dumpling House – 695 Sandringham Road, Sandringham 

‘love Tianze they do the best dumplings around central, the foods always good and never disappointed me or my friends also really cheap but food still good’

Try it Out Restaurant – 79 Atkinson Avenue, Ōtāhuhu

‘Flavours are so authentic and well balanced. The best Vietnamese restaurant I’ve been to.’

But it wouldn’t be a competition without a winner. The ‘Best BYO in Auckland’ and a $5000 small business support package tailored to their needs as a prize is… El Greco!

El Greco owners Sarah and Kostas have an infectious energy and such an inspiring story – from restoring the restaurant in 2020 after a fire damaged much of the property to giving away free meals to families in need in the community, they are true local legends.
