As much as we love a good romance, more often than not you’ll find us diving into an epic sci-fi or fantasy adventure full of apocalypses and hottie warriors.
Given these books seem so far-fetched, they act as the perfect escape from everything else going on and we won’t lie, it is super fun to imagine yourself as a badass chick fighting space aliens or zombies and surviving the end of the world.
If you love a little action in your literature, we’ve put together a list of our favourite sci-fi and fantasy books we couldn’t put down.

What kind of list would this be if we didn’t kick it off with Harry Potter.
The series that defined most of our childhoods, Harry Potter still stands the test of time and holds a place in our hearts as one of the most epic fantasy adventures ever written.
With great character development throughout the books, some incredible world building and a lot of tragic and explosive shit going down, Rowling gave our imaginations an overload in the best possible ways.
A great series to reread – even if you can’t help but picture the actors the entire time.

Tris is such a badass and we like that while she does show her vulnerable side, she never plays the victim – something that seems to be lacking in a lot of books. Tris is a force of nature and that is clearly evident in the way she commands herself in the face of fear: from jumping off the roof first to taking a beating during training, Tris embodies key components of female empowerment.
Can we take a minute to talk about Four? Damn yo, that is a sexy man! Four has elements that make up the perfect book boyfriend: smart, funny, charismatic, kick ass and he has a body full of muscles.
Roth has put together a vivid world populated with a shit tonne of action and dynamic supporting characters.

We weren’t sure we were going to like this but cue 2am when we still couldn’t put it down.
Set in 2044 but full of awesome 80’s references that kick you right in the nostalgia feels, Ready Player One set alight our inner nerd.
The Oasis sounds f’ing epic and is so vivid in our minds that we would definitely want to escape there some weeks.
Led by witty and likeable characters that bring this video game world to life, Ready Player One is an epic book and an epic movie.

A retelling of Beauty and the Beast in the loosest sense, the fairytale vibes are well in this epic fantasy series with a badass chick at the helm.
Outside of the eventual romance, which we’re happy to report does not involve a love triangle, there is another type of love…that of family. Family comes in various forms throughout the series but it is always a constant presence and a driving motivator for the characters actions.
One thing we love about Sarah J. Maas is it doesn’t matter how many different worlds she creates, they are consistently complex, vivid and full of unique life. This series is a perfect example of this. The character development in these books are outstanding and the grand battle sequences are diabolical in all the best ways. Everything feels like it comes full circle and we can’t fault one thing.

This is a dual perspective book with two girls Lyra and Gemma at the helm in this twisty sci-fiesque film with human experiments as the backdrop.
Lyra is such an interesting and innocent character. Raised in the Haven Institute and equipped with a curious mind, a series of events lead her to find a comrade in another replica named 72 and two teenagers named Gemma and Jake. We loved Gemma. She is a strange combination of timid and feisty and watching her navigate her journey in the wake of some major revelations was really exciting.
This book is full of explosions, experimentations, family, friends, love, creepy doctors and more.

Safe to say most of us read this either at school or as kids, but the magical realism has stood the test of time that even as adults we still find joy in this book.
Who didn’t want to be a kid travelling through time?
Until the movie came out, we’d forgotten about the underlying messages that really pull this story and the characters together.
A Wrinkle in Time explores the importance of self, family and love in a way that kicks you in the feels and keeps you hooked.
A must read at least once in your life.
