So, what’d we think?

Blockers is a f’ing hilarious addition to the female-led raunchy comedy scene that sees Leslie Mann (This is 40), John Cena (Trainwreck) and Ike Barinholtz (Bad Neighbours) star as three parents who find out their daughters plan to lose their virginity on prom night.

A quick parental rundown:

  • Lisa (Mann) is the cool but high-maintenance mother of Julie (Kathryn Newton) who can’t come to terms with the fact that her daughter is eighteen and about to move out of home.
  • Mitchell (Cena) is the constantly emotional father of Kayla (Geraldine Viswanathan) who has a sports coach attitude to life and a tough exterior that would have any prospective boyfriend running for the hills.
  • Hunter (Barinholtz) is the classic absent father of Sam (Gideon Adlon) with a penchant for chaos and a desire to be liked by his daughter and the other parents.

When the trio “accidentally” stumbles upon their daughters group chat featuring an emoji filled #sexpact2018 discussion, they spiral into panic mode and embark on a night of hilarious and embarrassing antics to keep every penis away from their girls 🍆👉👌🙌🍑 While the parents are in a full downward spiral, the girls are having their own fun thanks to an eccentric limo driver, alcohol and drugs plus some make-out sessions that take them from prom to house party and hotel party.

With a butt-chugging scene (you read that right) featuring Cena that will leave you gasping for breath, Blockers is a truly great comedy that succeeds where others might have failed.

The real power of this film lies in the girls themselves. Where teen-sex comedies such as American Pie showcased sexually empowered boys experimenting and trying to lose their virginity, Blockers puts the power in the hands of these eighteen year old girls and allows them to have the full teenage experience without judgement. The girls are smart, they embrace their sexuality, make their own decisions about sex, drinking and drugs and do it in the comfort and safety of their peers.

All of this is thanks to a brilliant script that pushes the raunch without making it gratuitious or unbelievable. You believe that these parents in their fear would go to outrageous and subsequently hilarious lengths to protect their daughters, just as you believe that their daughters want to have a night of debaucherous fun with their friends on one of their last nights in high school. It’s smart and witty and a perfect directorial debut for Kay Cannon, the genius mind behind one of our fave chick flicks Pitch Perfect.

But, should you see it?

A smart and fun comedy that features a likeable cast with perfect comedic timing, this raunchy film is packed with heart and laugh out loud moments that is a perfect watch for you and your girls.

Saw the trailer but not entirely convinced but probably a good movie to just chill and not think too much. Just wholesome fun. I was a fan of Game Night, could this be a funny movie to compare with?

I am really keen to see this. I hope it’s the empowering normalising tale of female sexuality that it appears to be. Might have to organise a girls night at the movies.

It actually looks pretty funny – I have never really liked these types of films but watched one similar (the name escapes me) a few months ago and roared with laughter 🙂
