Tired of your man wearing baggy jeans and an oversized hoodie when you’re heading out? Give your man a bit of a style upgrade with the best kept secret in fashion…a tailor.
Having tailored pieces in his wardrobe will not only give him a confidence boost when he sees how stylish he looks but it will also give him a few go-to’s he can pair together for a wedding, work event or date night.
Some things to think about when looking for a tailor
- Take the hassle out of visiting a tailor by choosing someone close to home or his work
- Always read a few reviews on Google or Facebook to see if they’re going to be good for your man
- Call and ask if they can shorten a jacket sleeve from the shoulder. If they can, then they are a tailor not a seamster.
- Optional – visit the store without him and get a feel for it. Women’s intuition works best here.
The first time you visit the tailor, take in two – three pieces with you. Jeans/Chinos always look best tailored and you can’t go past a well-fitted button-up shirt so pick one that will match his best suit. Be sure to take a pair of shoes and a belt with you for any pants he wants shortened.
Insider tip: Make sure he puts the shoes and belt on and tucks in his shirt before they start measuring – learnt that one the hard way!
After a few trips to the tailor, his confidence will grow and he’ll be able to pop in with new items as he needs.

Take it from me, I’ve been tailoring my wardrobe for years and ever since the switch I haven’t looked back. A few things I’ve learnt are:
- A lot of your clothing pieces will benefit from tailoring tweaks
- Everything looks better after it has been tailored
- Don’t tailor cheap items of clothing, it’s generally not worth it
- Purchase higher quality items
- Care for your clothes, you’ve invested time and money into them
- You’re confidence goes up because you know everything fits you properly
- You can never go back to un-tailored clothes
Opting for fitted clothing, makes a man look more sophisticated, classy and expensive. Anyone can buy clothes off the rack but a real man will make sure it fits him properly. Tailoring may seem like too much of an effort for him, but just wait till he starts getting the compliments of how good he looks in his fitting outfits. He will thank you later!
