As if 2020 hasn’t been enough of a horror show in itself, the spookiest night of the year is fast approaching. To get you ready for Halloween, we’ve put together some of our favourite horror movies (the scary, gory and campy kind), and a few nostalgic releases to get you in a frightful mood.

Ready or Not
Grace couldn’t be happier after she marries the man of her dreams at his family’s luxurious estate. There’s just one catch — she must now hide from midnight until dawn while her new in-laws hunt her down with guns, crossbows and other weapons. As Grace desperately tries to survive the night, she soon finds a way to turn the tables on her not-so-lovable relatives.
I can’t lie, this was entertaining AF in the most surprising ways. Samara Weaving slashes her way into the spotlight as the dorky turned fierce lead in this dark horror-comedy that provides edge of your seat thrills. What I can only describe as nail bitingly, edge of your seat good, the largely over-the-top gory moments and perfectly timed comedic breaks add to the brilliance of Ready of Not. Two parents (Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke) take their kids to their beach house to unwind with friends (Elisabeth Moss and Tim Heidecker), but relaxation turns to tension and chaos with the arrival of shocking strangers at nightfall—strangers that look just like them.
When I first saw Jordan Peele’s Get Out I was completely captivated by how dark, twisted and smart that psychological thriller was and while Peele was certainly on my radar beforehand, he definitely bumped up a few spots to be someone to watch in the thriller/horror space. For me, US is a completely flawless horror movie that delights in making you feel unnerved from start to end. Whether we’re in the midst of a truly horrific, edge of your seat moment or chuckling to some classic dad banter thanks to Gabe, you can’t help but feel throughout the whole film that everything is just a little off.

John Krasinski (The Office) directs, co-writes and stars alongside Emily Blunt (Edge of Tomorrow) in this horror in which a family must stay silent to hide from an evil presence that hunts by sound
One of the truly great suspense films of the last decade, A Quiet Place is led by a small but talented cast who somehow manage to infuse great life into their characters with barely any words spoken. Silence is the biggest character in this film, so any time someone accidentally makes a sound that might otherwise go unnoticed, your heart starts beating faster and you hold your breath for a moment longer knowing that the film is about to crank its intense-o-meter up to max. When I say it is an original take on the genre, I really do mean it. It is psychologically deep, visually creepy and the performances are phenomenal. Check out our full movie review.
Nostalgic films
Hocus Pocus
A curious youngster moves to Salem, where he struggles to fit in before awakening a trio of diabolical witches that were executed in the 17th century.
If you didn’t watch this over and over (and over) again as a kid, I don’t know what you were doing. The classic story of devilish witches out to cause chaos and fulfil a prophecy (classic!), Bette Midler (Winifred), Sarah Jessica Parker (Sarah) and Kathy Najimy (Mary) will put a spell on you.
The Craft
A new student befriends three teenage girls from her high school who practise witchcraft against those who irk them. However, the consequences of joining the coven turn out to be disastrous.
This movie is a cult classic! If you are ever missing the 90’s this is the film for you. This movie has been a staple for me and friends since the day it was released on VHS! We instantly fell in love with it.The Exorcist
An actress notices dangerous changes in the behaviour and physical make-up of her 12-year-old daughter. Meanwhile, a young priest begins to doubt his faith while dealing with his mother’s sickness.
Not only one of the greatest horror movies of all time but one of the greatest movies of all time. If you like jump scares and predictable music then this movie is NOT for you! If you like build-up, characterization, and dialect then this is the movie for you! The old school makeup art and special effects cannot be matched by modern computerized CGI. The actors and screenplay are superb. The movie is near flawless.A Nightmare on Elm Street
A young girl realises that she has to stay awake at any cost to avoid the clawed killer who is butchering her friends one by one in their dreams.
This is a very artistic movie from the 1980’s. The plot line is very original, it is more than just a killer who kills you in your sleep while wearing a bladed glove which is known as Freddy Krueger. This is my number 1 favourite horror film of all. Plus the fact, Freddy Krueger is also my number 1 favourite horror icon along with other villains.What is your favourite movie to watch on Halloween?
