Grace couldn’t be happier after she marries the man of her dreams at his family’s luxurious estate. There’s just one catch — she must now hide from midnight until dawn while her new in-laws hunt her down with guns, crossbows and other weapons. As Grace desperately tries to survive the night, she soon finds a way to turn the tables on her not-so-lovable relatives.
What’d I think?
I can’t lie, this was entertaining AF in the most surprising ways. Samara Weaving slashes her way into the spotlight as the dorky turned fierce lead in this dark horror-comedy that provides edge of your seat thrills.
Ready or Not opens with a scene that is a masterclass in intrigue. We follow two little boys as they run around a dark house trying to find somewhere to hide while a man is seen bleeding in the background. Enter a group of masked assailants, a screaming bride and a quick glance at a room that feels sinister.
The film cuts to 20 years later where we meet our main babe Grace (Weaving) on the day she’s set to marry Alex Le Domas (Mark O’Brien), the son of a rich gaming family. The film quickly establishes that the family is full of quirky characters and we waste no time jumping into the main event.
Before Grace can officially becoming a Le Domas, she must partake in a family tradition and play a game. After a long speech that explains how a great, great grandfather started their fortune by making a deal with the devil, Grace pulls the one game card you never want to get, hide and seek. With terrified looks on the faces of the family and a creepy hide and seek themed song playing in the background, Grace runs to hide while the family arms themselves with weapons to begin their hunt…ready or not.
As the night carries on, alliances are tested, the meaning behind the opening slips into place and Grace turns from blushing bride to badass bitch.
What I can only describe as nail bitingly, edge of your seat good, the largely over-the-top gory moments and perfectly timed comedic breaks add to the brilliance of Ready of Not. It’s one hell of a thrill ride.
A smart script and a truly talented cast (including my forever #mcm Seth Cohen Adam Brody) turns this into a cult classic. With an ending that is equals parts hilarious and horrifying, Ready Or Not has quickly earned a spot in this horror lovers must-watch list.
