How To Use Videos To Capture Life On The Go

Life can really fly by without us even realising which is why it’s so important to capture as many memories and moments as you can.

As crazy as it might seem, I’ve found my phone has become invaluable at family events, nights out with friends or when I’m out and about exploring our own backyard. Capturing a few quick vids that I can sit back and look at anytime I want has been a great way to reminisce about some of my favourite moments.

Something I like to do is compile mini videos of special moments in my life. When I went to the U.S. in 2016, I created 4 two-minute long videos of things I saw, ate and experienced on my trip. All of these videos hold a special place in my heart and I love getting to re-experience the joy my family and I felt as we created these lifelong memories. I’ve been able to easily share these amongst my friends and family and these little gems are something I’ll treasure forever.

Where to start

Making compilations is as easy as saying 1-2-3! There are plenty of applications you can use to create them but a few of my favourites are, iMovie, a factory application on Apple devices, Hitfilm Express (voted the best free editing software in the game), and VSDC, a Windows-only free video editor with some really cool features.

While your phone might not have the best quality camera money can buy, it is a really convenient and easy way to get started with video creation. I’m sure you’ve taken a few selfies over the years with your partner or a bunch of girlfriends, so why not start taking videos of you all too? Capture the joy and happiness of everyday life and give yourself something fun to look back on.

Quick Tips

If you don’t know where to start, check out some of these quick tips that are easy to master.

  • Use plenty of light
    • Lighting makes a huge difference in the quality of a finished professional video
  • Keep your editing simple
    • Trying out different effects can be fun during the video editing process, but don’t go too crazy. A simple, clean editing style generally looks most professional
    • There are a tonne of apps available to quickly edit your videos – you can add music, text or anything else you like to personalise your videos
  • Use your phone the right way
    • Use the camera on the back of your phone as the front camera’s quality is not as good on most phones
    • Record in landscape mode (that is, horizontally instead of vertically). This will give you footage that looks good on larger devices, not just phone screens
    • If your phone has a feature that allows you to overlay a grid on your screen, use it. This will help you keep your phone level and avoid tilted footage
