If you catch me with my headphones in, I’m either listening to 2000s RnB jams or diving deep into a new podcast. Whether they’re about sex, relationships, fitness, true-crime, comedy or just something random you’ve stumbled upon, I think we can all agree that podcasts are pretty entertaining. The more I listen to them though the more I start to think, could I start a podcast?
I know that I’d love to capture some of the conversations I’ve had with my friends and the idea of getting to chat to different people from all walks of life feels like a great way to expand my world-view. It also seems like a fun way to spend more time with my friends and family.
If you’ve been curious about starting your own podcast as a hobby or something more financially viable, check out these tips including a few essential items to help get you started.
For a step-by-step guide…
- Come up with a concept (a topic, name, format, and target length for each episode).
- Design artwork and write a description to “brand” your podcast.
- Record and edit your audio files (such as MP3s). A microphone is recommended for clearer sound
- Find a place to host your files (such as a file host that specializes in podcasts, like Libsyn or Podbean).
- Syndicate these audio files into an RSS feed so they can be distributed through Apple Podcasts and downloaded or streamed on any device on-demand.
- I personally would also add that maybe filming the recording of your podcast on a good quality camera (not your iPhone). You can then upload this to YouTube. Doing this creates a more personable relationship with your audience.
- If you are wanting to turn your podcast into a business idea, sadly you will have to do all the boring business plan things. But we can worry about that later on, for now let’s get you started.
Don’t worry about not knowing what to do, or what to say. The best way to start creating one, is get some good people around and write down some fun, funny or interesting topics that you all enjoy chatting about. Nothing is worse than a dry conversation.
My favourite podcasts are always people just talking about their life and their experiences – the good the bad and the hilarious! Trial some things out and see what people think. Once you find your groove, stick with it and keep going. Practice makes perfect!
