So, what’d we think?
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson takes his action prowess to a new level in Skyscraper, a film about greed, corruption and family.
The film follows Will Sawyer (Johnson), a former FBI agent who lost his leg and now runs his own security firm. When he is contracted to survey The Pearl, the tallest building in Hong Kong run by Zhao Long Ji (Han), everything appears to be running smoothly until some classic baddies with foreign accents infiltrate the building and set it alight. With Will’s wife Sarah (Campbell) and their two kids trapped inside the building, Will fights his way through the busy streets of Hong Kong, the burning building and the terrorists to save his family.
A nice mix of entertaining and cheesy, Skyscraper presents an explosive action film that doesn’t appear to take itself too seriously. Johnson is great at adding humour to ridiculous and far-fetched sequences, like scaling the side of a building using rope and duct tape, with quips that roused a few laughs from the audience. It’s nice to see an action film that isn’t all explosions and macho men thinking they’re the shit.
In saying that though, Skyscraper is yet another action film where Johnson in his desire to do the right thing takes matters into his own hands, risking life and limb to be the hero. Has no one mentioned to him that there is safety in numbers? That’s 101 stuff.
With a few far-fetched yet heart pumping scenes scattered throughout, Skyscraper provides some intense moments that show the tried and tested action movie formula still works.
But, should you see it?
If you like muscles, explosions and you’ve been wondering what happened to Neve Campbell, this is the film for you. An entertaining and easy watch, we’d definitely recommend grabbing some popcorn and heading to the theatres to catch this blockbuster.
