Us ladies love our locks. But nothing is worse than having unhealthy hair, and constant trims and treatments adds up quickly. So, we have a few foods you can try that will help with your hair health.
1. DAIRY TO HELP HAIR GROW
Our hair is mostly made up of proteins so foods like cottage cheese and yogurt are perfect. They are simple ways to get important proteins like casein and whey into your diet. Having this macro-nutrient is essential for both growth and strength.
“Dairy proteins are high in biological value which means they contain all of the amino acids – protein building blocks – that the human body needs,” says Dr Ruxton.
2. OILY FISH TO COMBAT HAIR LOSS
As we all know iron is a very important mineral in our body. With our hair, iron is stored in the follicles and used for numerous necessary body processes. If the body is low on iron, these stores start to be used up by other cells and your hair suffers. So consuming fish of the oily varieties (salmon and mackerel ect) contain fatty acids like omega-3, can help to slow hair loss. Fish also contains a plentiful supply of iron and vitamin B12, which are essential for healthy hair.
“Women and girls often lack iron and can improve absorption by having a glass of pure orange juice with the main meal of the day,” says Dr Ruxton.
3. WHOLE GRAINS TO BOOST THICKNESS
Zinc is a key aspect to hair health. This is because it’s used to regulate the hormones that have a direct impact on the thickness and growth of your hair. Consume whole-grains like breads and cereals, these contain zinc, B vitamins and iron.
“A laboratory study found that a constituent of millet – a wholegrain cereal – stimulated the growth of hair cells although this needs to be tested properly in human subjects,” says Dr Ruxton.
4. WALNUTS TO COMBAT DANDRUFF
Walnuts can help decrease your likelihood of dryness and flakes.Full of selenium, an important mineral that boosts the health of your scalp. You may have seen plenty of walnut shampoos on the shelves too.
5. CARROTS TO BOOST SHINE
Thanks to vitamin A, these vegetables help you get that shiny, well-conditioned look by maintaining the natural oils in the hair and keeping your scalp in tip top condition.
“Foods rich in vitamin A and their precursor nutrients, carotenoids, can also help protect your hair and skin from sun damage,” says Dr Ruxton. “Other examples include red and yellow peppers, oranges, tomatoes, apricots and spinach.”
6. DARK GREEN VEGETABLES TO COMBAT DRYNESS
Dark leafy greens like spinach and broccoli contain vitamins A and C. These vitamins help the body create sebum. Sebum is a naturally produced conditioner for your hair.
“Healthy oils, such as olive oil, avocados and flax-seed may also help,” suggests Dr Ruxton.
