One day, she thought, one moment, one innocent game. How was it that day, that moment, that game never seemed to end?
Caitlyn Sullivan is just nine years old when a game of hide and seek at a family party will change her life forever.
The betrayal she experienced that night will shape Caitlyn’s life – and for years she runs and runs, hiding from the aftermath of the trauma. But Caitlyn comes to realise that if she wants to not just survive but thrive, she must return to the family home to face up to her past.
What happened that night may always haunt Caitlyn but she must decide if it’s what you’re running from that matters.
Or who finds you.
What’d I think?
Hideaway follows Caitlyn Sullivan, a woman born into Hollywood royalty who becomes a child star in her own right. Her life is turned upside down when at the age of ten, Cate finds herself at the center of a kidnapping plot. Taken during a family celebration at Big Sur, the trauma sustained as a result of her kidnapping changes the trajectory of her life.
The following years see Cate moving in various directions, engaging in failed relationships and continuing to try to move on with her life – to varying degrees of success. She finally manages to ground herself in a job as a voice actress, a position that takes her back to her childhood home that holds so many memories and to the family that once saved her from her nightmare. Queue a slow burn romance.
Characterisation is the hero of this book. Cate, Dillon, the Sullivan family and every character in between is rich with emotion and as a reader, it’s a real treat to continuously engage with characters that have so much depth. The Sullivan’s are the best example of this.
What I realised reading Hideaway is that I’ve read far too many books where strong women come from families that are brash and wrapped up in their money and legacy. The Sullivan’s are far from that. Roberts has taken care creating a family that while complicated, is nothing but supportive and very much on Cate’s team. Of course there are a few characters that you don’t love as much, but overall, it was refreshing to read about a family written in this nature. I love that this is a multigenerational family that has their own traditions, shows their love for Cate and each other so honestly and isn’t defined only by their success.
I don’t want to share too much of the story because I think Nora Roberts has done a wonderful job of creating a world that you need to read yourself. With a sweet romance and a heart influenced by the love of family, Hideaway is a contemporary read that has something for everyone.
