What a year 2019 is shaping up to be for on-screen entertainment. April certainly delivered some epic DVD and big screen watches that had us feeling like we were half made of popcorn by the end of the month. If you’re looking for something new to watch, check out the movies we’ve seen recently.

The Aftermath
I'll be honest, I'm not a huge Keira Knightley fan but this movie was so stunning it gave me all the damn feels. Set following the end of the rarely depicted WWII, the beautiful British Rachel (Keira Knightley) is lonely and grieving the loss of her only child. In the hope that she can fill the void and spend more time with her British Colonel husband Lewis (Jason Clarke), she relocates to Germany to be with him. They find themselves in a Downton Abbey situation bunking up with hottie German house owner Stefan (Alexsander Skarsgard) and his daughter. Stefan is also struggling with his own loss and personal fall-out in post war Germany.
With two lonely people shacked up together, looking to fill the void and Rachel’s husband rarely home, what could possibly go wrong?
Not without its flaws, this film dives deep into the drama and will have you wishing you wore your waterproof mascara.
The Long Shot
An unexpected hit, The Long Shot is a hilarious comedy that plays on the far-fetched nature of the political world and the natural chemistry between Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron. This movie is full of cringe-worthy moments, hilarious hijinks and surprisingly, a lot of heart. Theron and Rogen are the comedy duo I didn't know I needed and if you're looking for an easy watch, this is definitely the one for you - just maybe leave mum at home.

Bumblebee
Bumblebee is a completely refreshing addition to the Transformers universe. Following the yellow VW that stole our hearts, this film takes place in the 80s with Hailee Steinfeld at the helm and a nostalgic soundtrack to give you all the feels.
A fun, feisty and explosive take on the Transformers world, this movie is an origin story that opens on Cybertron and depicts a battle between the Autobots and the Decepticons. It's the story any Transformers movie lover knows but for whatever reason, hasn't been adeptly explored in the previous films. Cut to Bumblebee crash landing in a fiery explosion in California, 1987 and through a series of events, ending up in the garage of young Charlie (Steinfeld).
The movie is then exactly what you think its going to be however while the last few films have focused on mass explosions and very little plot, Bumblebee gives you a heartfelt joyride that keeps you entertained right to the very end. If you've given up on the Transformers series then its time to give it another go because Bumblebee has finally got it right.
Mary Poppins Returns
I’m going to say it…this film is “practically perfect in every way”.
I was an equal amount of excited and apprehensive to see this film because Julie Andrews as Mary Poppinsis basically my childhood but OMFG, I couldn’t even anticipate how delightful Mary Poppins Returns would be.
Emily Blunt is an absolute babe (on and off screen) and her version of the loveable Mary Poppins is flawless. Blunt sprinkles her own magic onto the character and enhances Mary Poppins in a fresh and exciting way. Her voice is divine and coupled with the likes of Lin Manuel-Miranda (who takes on the Dick Van Dyke role), the two beautifully bring to life some new songs that stick in your head for days.
With some larger than life musical scenes including one that reimagines the cartoon sequences first seen in ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’, Mary Poppins Returns gives you all the nostalgia feels.
Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Okay, I can see why this was nominated for so many awards.
Melissa McCarthy stars in this unbelievable true story about Lee Israel, a failing author who takes it upon herself to start forging letters by famous celebrities. A near perfect drama, Can You Forgive Me? puts you in the middle of a desperate woman's attempt at relevancy where ones morals are in question and relationships are tested. I couldn't help but be swept up in Lee Israel's downward spiral as she falls further and further into her scam thanks to a dynamic script and a brilliant performance by McCarthy. Her portrayal of a woman with so many unredeemable qualities is so charismatic that at times I found myself feeling sorry Lee Israel and the mess she created for herself. An easy watch with a great cast, Can You Ever Forgive Me? is one not to let slip off your radar.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
I’ve never been a huge Spider-Man fan but I LOVED this movie. Set in a really cool comic book style, Into the Spider-Verse is full of adventure, espionage and quirky characters that bring the dynamic script to life. A little different from other Spider-Man films, this movie follows a young boy named Miles who through a series of events is bitten by ‘the spider’ and turned into a Spider-Man. When the big bad tries to tear the world apart for selfish reasons, he comes face-to-face with other incarnations of Spider-Man (including the boss babe Gwen Stacey) from parallel universes. The chaos that ensues is wild and highly entertaining.
With actors such as Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfield and John Mulaney voicing the characters, the film is equal parts hilarious and tender. Definitely worth a watch.
