Binge watching is like our Olympic sport and no matter how f’ing busy our lives are, we always find time to squeeze in a few episodes of whatever show we’re hyping (or re-hyping) at the moment.
Right now we’re OBSESSED to an unhealthy level with over a handful of shows that have us coming back week-after-week for more.
Grab some snacks, a glass of wine and settle in with some of our favourite shows we’re streaming right now.
Sharp Objects
Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: she must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful 13 year old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family’s Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victms – a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story – and survive this homecoming.
So dark. So twisted. So brilliant.
Based on the book of the same name by Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl), Sharp Objects is a dark mystery with Amy Adams at the helm. Over 8 episodes, this miniseries pushes Adams acting talents to the edge and delivers an explosive murder-mystery that constantly has you second guessing every characters motive and leaves you feeling unnerved at the end of every episode. With a tonne of compelling twists, some deeply flawed characters and revelations that have you screaming WTF JUST HAPPENED?!, Sharp Objects is by far one of the best miniseries we’ve watched.
The Good Place
The Good Place is a town where those who have been good throughout their lives go once they have passed away. Michael (Danson) is the architect who oversees the town. Eleanor (Bell) arrives at the Good Place and realizes she doesn’t deserve to be there. With the help of Chidi (Harper), Eleanor tries to right her wrongs seeking to finally earn her spot in the Good Place.
This little gem is one of our best and weirdest finds.
Kristen Bell and Ted Danson lead a hilarious cast of misfits in this strange and genius take on the afterlife. Set in ‘The Good Place’, a colourful and utopian version of the afterlife where all the goodie-two-shoes get to go once they die, Bell stars as Eleanor, a selfish and at times mean-spirited person who has mistakenly been sent there. With swearing substituted for words like shirt and ducking and any character flaws heightened, The Good Place is a crazy, smile-inducing watch.
The Handmaid’s Tale
A religion-based autocracy has taken over most of the United States, renaming the country Gilead. In this country women are second-class citizens. Anyone trying to escape is punished. One such person is June, who is captured while trying to escape with her husband and child and is sentenced to be a handmaid, bearing children for childless government officials. As a handmaid, June is renamed Offred. This is her story.
Everyone is losing it over this show and it’s worth all the hype.
All we can really say is that this show is so freaking good and you need to invest your time into watching this twisted and downright heartwrenching dystopian world. Elizabeth Moss is our Queen!
Nailed It
Home bakers with a terrible track record take a crack at re- creating edible masterpieces for a $10,000 prize. It’s part reality contest, part hot mess.
To all our fellow shit bakers out there, this one is for us.
The shows host, comedian Nicole Byer, is part our ultimate BFF and part annoying girl at a party but we are 100% here for it. Following three contestants each episode, this breakout show is a hilarious take on your favourite baking shows where average everyday bakers try to recreate complex cakes and other baking goodies in a short amount of time. The outcomes are laugh-out-loud amazing and we relate to these amateur bakers on a soulful level. We’ve all experienced our own #nailedit disasters and we’ll be honest, it’s so fun to watch other people fail as miserably as we do at something that should be so simple.
