For some people, exercising is a normal part of their lives and they look forward to hitting the gym, heading to yoga or going for a run. That’s great for those people, but for the rest of us, it can be a case of having a long hard chat with ourselves and at times tricking ourselves into moving our bodies.
We want this year to be your best year yet, so we’ve put together 5 totally doable ways to motivate yourself to get up and get fit.
#1 Music – music is a must! Create a new playlist and add all of your favourite jams to it to help get you in the fitness mood. Perfect for a pre-workout stretch session or as your own soundtrack at the gym. Some of our favourites on Spotify are below.
#2 Buddy system – getting social and exercising with a friend can make things a lot easier. Not only is it nice to go for a hike or a spin class with a girlfriend, it will also help knowing that you are both holding each other accountable.
#3 Go for fun – don’t force yourself to do exercises you hate because before long you’ll resent doing it. Join up for some Zumba or dance classes, take a spin class, go for a beach walk or find another activity you love that gets you moving.
#4 Wearables – feeling rich and want to throw some cash at some gadgets? Fitness trackers and smart watches are the new way to keep yourself motivated and to track your workout.

#5 Hit up the gram – Instagram is not only great for some #fitspo inspiration, but you can also find great walks in your area by using the “place” or “tag” search. Finding places you are excited to go walking or running will help keep you motivated on the weekends.
Loving the pictures of the top hit lists for working out. Me and my hubby have made a deal to go to the gym from 14th of may onwards. The day I also give up smoking so this will definitely help with the being a non smoker and make me fit and well for my children with more energy. This year is definitely my year.
I am recently new to the world of Spotify but I am amazed at how good it is. It makes me feel energised and I forget that I’m exercising. Its a winner for me.
Oh music spotify for the win. Thanks for this list. Will go and check some of these out. Sorry to say, I’m having a hard time with the fitness wearables. At first, it did challenge me to count steps…but being forgetful…I then forget to charge them and/or wear them. It’s like another “phone” that I have to search for the entire house…and by then I’ve already done steps that the fitness tracker didn’t even get to track! LOL.
I find it has to be fun. This year I have done heaps of walking but only because we are out in the sun, walking the beaches or in the bush. That’s when I feel like it’s less of a chore. I’m seeing new things and exploring.
Music is definitely a great motivator. I think the hardest time to be motivated is to start and once you get going it is much easier to be motivated to keep going.
I need to get more motivated with exercise again we have a treadmill that you can attach your phone into to play music on it it’s great exercising to music a definite must do. I really do want a smart watch as well but unsure what one to get as they range so much in pricing. Because we live rural it’s harder to go to gym classes etc so best to do at home.
Ooo love these ideas all 5 are deff motivators for me… Especially the music and getting a fit bit or similar… Im quite a tangible type person so I need to see that what I’m doing is actually doing something so a fit bit is a definite for me and now I’m smoke free it can be my next reward u buy with what was my cigarette money. Like the look of a couple if the playlists above too need to have a blast of them when I next exercise
I have been thinking about ‘wearables’ a fair bit later and think it might be time to treat myself to a few things that I can use to continue being fit and healthy!
Music is a definite must for me. It’s difficult for me to exercise due to having hip displaysia and a lot of pain, plus gotta be careful what I do. I walk mostly and music is a big part of that 🙂 Don’t think I’d use a fitness tracker although they are cool and very handy, I don’t really have too much time as I work fulltime and have a 5 year old 🙂
Agree with you need a buddy it makes it so much easier to get out and do a workout with a friend. I do upto 4 zumba classes a week and once you get going and get meeting people you get in the ..”zumba family” they are happy to see you, ask you why you weren’t at the last class. Makes it more a social thing than exercise. My tip would be try, try something you might like it. I am currently loving doing pump class and powerlifting I’m quite strong I didn’t realise till I tried. It’s great to mix things up. Great music will make the time fly love the Spotify lists. Alot of classes do first time free so take up those offers and find something you like! I’m 130kg and can shake my thing 4 times a week on the dance floor. The oldest in the class just turned 80. No excuses find something you get upset about when you can’t go makes exercise life
I got a fitness tracker for Christmas, and it does remind me to get moving (very often) I love when I reach my fitness goals for the day but too often lately I haven’t. I love music so I will make myself a playlist and get moving!!
